West Australian Duo Shine at Thailand's Historic Annual King's Birthday Celebrations

On the 4th of December 2005 at Bangkok's premier landmark Sanam Luang; A Mega Muay Thai Gala was held in respects and celebration of Thailand's King Bhumipol Adulyadej, backed up by The King Great Rama IV Foundation, Lumpinee's elite Petchyindee Promotions and the World Professional Muay Thai Federation (WPMF). The Gala consisted of a 70 kilogram 8 Man Eliminator Tournament and a convincingly ecstatic set of support bouts.

The 8 man Eliminator consisted of fighters from around the globe aiming at winning the million baht prize and being crowned the King's Birthday Celebrations Champion.

Big names included Thailand's Samkor Kiatmonthep, Japan's K-1 Max Super fighter Kinami, England's Phil Mcalpine, Western Australia's very own Jason Lea from Odine's, Bunbury and various others representing Belarus, Russia, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.

With Jason Lea taking it to his Dutch opponent with devastating low kicks and solid hands unfortunately the judges saw the decision go to the other fighter in a very narrow loss. With the Dutch man advancing to the next round he became the next victim of Samkor's hard left kicks which he couldn't seem to answer with anything.

Samkor Kiatmonthep went through to the final to battle it out with England's Mcalpine taking the Championship Title and earning himself the honour of the nation as millions watched on channel 7 national TV.

Two WPMF World titles were also contested on the night with Japan's Masa Hiroshima beating England's Lee Colville and Slovakia's Rudolf Durica outclassing Belarus's Andrea Kulebin retaining their Supreme world title belts.

The undercard saw Austrlia's David Ziarno from Phon's Thai Martial Arts take on Japan's Shinoki in a hard fought and action packed bout. From the third round onwards Ziarno sliced and diced with repeatedly thrown elbows to Shinoki's face and head. With each blow; the crowd roared as the Jap narrowly held on to get ahead on the judge's scorecards and be awarded the victory. Ziarno had lost the fight but had won the heart of fans as they applauded and smilingly shook his gloves upon exiting the ring.

Other super bouts saw Thai Legend Somrak Kamsing finish off Canada's Jovan Stringer in the third round with a class spinning elbow.

A great and memorable event it was which should allow everyone who took part in it; to take great pride.

Get ready for the next great event scheduled for 2006 with another big bounty of 1 million baht prize money for the champion of the 70 kilogram 8 Man Eliminator.

Congratulations to the honourable Mr. Somsak Thepsutin for being elected as the new WPMF President replacing Mr. Somchart Charoenwacharawit at the Annual WPMF World Congress on the 4th of December 2005.
