Phon Martdee

Photograph of Phon Martdee Phon has over 40 years of experience in training fighters. Over his career he has trained more than 30 champions and has promoted over 60 events. He was born in Saraburi, near the ancient capital Ayutthaya, about 80kms north of Bangkok. "When I was about eight years old I had already learned the basics of Muay Thai from my Uncle, a former Muay Thai champion. I had watched Muay Thai for as long as I can remember on TV, learning through watching the greats who fought every week.

Whenever there was a festival in our province, and they advertised for locals to compete, I would rush to weigh-in and put myself forward to compete. Throughout my time at college, I regularly competed in Muay Thai matches and was chosen to represent Thailand in the Under 21s national soccer team. After that I worked in Bangkok for six years as a Physical Education and Recreation teacher at a Technical. I came to Australia in 1985 and in 1988 a high ranking official from the Sporting Authority of Thailand suggested that we open an authentic Muay Thai school as Australia was far behind the rest of the world with regards to the sport of Muay Thai.

Promoter CardsI opened my first school in 1989 under the name of Muay Thai Boxing Promotions (Phon's Gym) and shortly afterwards first started to promote Muay Thai competitions on a regular basis on Australian soil." Phon has been a truly motivating factor in the sport of Muay thai, promoting not only the sport but the lifestyle and culture as well. Phon has setup events at Conrad Jupiters Casino(Gold Coast),Burswood Dome and Challenge Stadium

Farewell

Jar Peng (Sargent Armporn Sarthong) was my great uncle who had inspired me with the true Art of Muay Thai. When I was younger he picked me up after school while my parents were out at work to baby sit. He taught me Muay Thai and the correct way of use and also the ways of a happy and healthy lifestyle. He encouraged me to compete for the province and to gain recognition. He was not just a great fighter but a real gentleman. He survived the Indo-China War where North fought South Korea and also the late Vietnam War. If it was not for him passing on his own knowledge and teachings of the Art of Muay Thai it would not be possible for me to understand the art and Thai lifestyle to pass it on to others. Awaiting to see me again this December sadly, he passed away on the 23rd June 2005 at 86 years old. (While I was in North America conducting the Seminars and Teachings). Through my respect and loyalty I will continue to do my best from what you have advised me through the past. I wish his soul and spirit to go in the right direction and I say thank you for everything.
